Island finally declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, proclaiming an independent state as the Federation of the Dodecanese islands. The nascent state was suppressed almost immediately by the invasion of the Kingdom of Italy, who wanted the islands, especially Rhodes, to control communication between Turkey and Libya. The Italians occupied the Dodecanese everything EXCEPT Kastellorizon, which was later taken by France. After the end of the war, according to the first treaty of Lausanne, Italy maintained the occupation of the islands, as security for the enforcement of the treaty. Following the declaration of war by Italy against the Ottoman Empire (the August 21, 1915), the occupation of the islands began again. During the First World War, in which Italy fought on the side of France and Britain, the islands became a British and French naval base important bells used for many, the most famous of the Gallipoli (attempted occupation of the Dardanelles). During the war some of the smaller islands were occupied by French and British, the Italians continued to Rhodes. After the war, Venizelos-Tittoni agreement signed on July 29, 1919, prior to the smaller islands will unite with Greece, Italy, in Rhodes, the change should take Italy to the south-west of Antalya in Anatolia. The Greek defeat in the Greco-Turkish War and the founding of modern Turkey made this solution impossible. With the Treaty of Lausanne was the Dodecanese then formally annexed by the Kingdom of Italy, as Italy’s Aegean Possessions. Benito Mussolini began a program italianizacion, hoping to make Rhodes a modern transportation center that would serve as a focal point for the extension of Italian culture through the Levant. The islands were overwhelmingly Greek-speaking, only a small minority of Turkish-speaking people ( 10,000) and a smaller Jewish minority in Ladin-speakers (with virtually no Italian-speaking). Despite this, the program had some positive effects fascist in its attempts to modernize the island, resulting in the removal of malaria, the construction of hospitals, aqueducts, a power plant to supply the capital of Rhodes and of electric lighting the establishment of the Cadastre of Dodecanese. The main castle of the Knights of St. John was also rebuilt. However, the Fascist architectural style (dominated by the cement) affect significantly the picturesque scenery of the islands, and therefore has been demolished or remodeled in large part, besides the famous example of the City of Leros Lakkios that remains a typical example of architecture. During World War II, Italy joined the Axis, use the Dodecanese and naval base for their invasion of Crete in 1940. After the surrender of Italy in September 1943, the island briefly became a battleground between German and Italian forces and allies (see Battle of Leros). The Germans prevailed, and although they were expelled from the islands of Greece in 1944, the Dodecanese remained until the end of the war in 1945. During that time almost the entire Jewish population was deported and killed. … to ensure the security of Turkey and Greece, and resulted in great … of Turkey in Cyprus to prevent the annexation of the island to Greece in 1974. … DK Travel to Greece, we have the best deals on travel to Greece with the best … Greece.
